After a few conversations with Dad (Capt. Ben Florentino @ Coastal Charters) about fun areas to explore, we decided on County Line. This stretch of coastline sits South of Pt. Mugu and North of the Point Dume MLPA closures. I had scouted the zone via PCH a few months prior and had vowed to come back and explore.
Joined by Mr. Randy Spizer of Kicker Fishing Brand, we launched out of MDR early on Spring Forward Sunday with one hour stolen, but one hour gained. We fished from County Line proper and worked our way South to Malibu and Santa Monica throughout the day. The most productive water we found was the 15' - 0' with shallow sand, submerged rock and scattered kelp. The surface iron and weedless brought followers with a couple takes, but jerkbaits and swimbaits got the right bites. Dope: The pause on the jerkbaits was working it's magic with a 1-2second pause. Swimbaits worked methodically through the rocks pulled out the remainder of healthy Santa Monica Bay Calico Bass.
The full moon & Grunion run could have played a big role to our solid shallow bite...or maybe it was the pockets of 61-62 degree water? Either way we had a killer day on the water exploring and hunting new bodies of water with 0 expectations. Big thanks to Dad for getting us out on the water and Spizer for the laughs.
